Type D (BS 546, 5 A) Power Plug
Also known as the Old British colonial / Indian.
About Type D (BS 546, 5 A)
Type D is the 5 A version of the British BS 546 standard, with three large round pins (7.06 mm) in a triangular arrangement. Britain itself replaced BS 546 with BS 1363 (Type G) in the 1940s, but the older standard remained in use across colonial territories and is now the dominant plug in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and several African countries.
India officially specifies a domestic standard (IS 1293) that is essentially Type D plus the 15 A variant Type M, with the same socket accepting both. In practice modern Indian outlets are universal and will accept Type C, Type D, and Type M plugs.
Visitors to India from Europe usually find Type C Europlugs fit Indian sockets directly. From North America, a Type A/B to Type D adapter is required, plus a step-down converter for ungrounded 120 V devices.
