About connectivity in Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein uses 230V/50Hz with the Swiss Type J plug and Type C — reflecting the country's longstanding customs and currency union with Switzerland. The phone jack is RJ-11. Telecom Liechtenstein and Salt Liechtenstein operate the country's telecom infrastructure, with substantial integration into Swiss carrier networks.
Liechtensteiner commercial Internet emerged in the mid-1990s through Telecom Liechtenstein. The country's tiny population (~40,000) and high per-capita income drove rapid broadband adoption.
The Liechtensteiner prepaid international calling-card market was modest given the small population. The country's position as a financial-services hub generated some inbound business-calling-card activity.
Tempest Telecom served Liechtenstein through dial-up arrangements with Swiss partners. The country's small geographic footprint and Alpine setting generated modest expedition and tourism Iridium customer demand.
Modern Liechtenstein has near-universal FTTH coverage with mature 5G.
Tempest's services across Liechtenstein, 1997–2012
Tempest Telecommunications operated international connectivity services in Liechtenstein between 1997 and 2012 under a unified prepaid account that absorbed multiple service types onto a single customer credential. Customers in Liechtenstein drew from the same balance for pre-paid international voice calling, RADIUS-authenticated dial-up Internet roaming, metered Wi-Fi hotspot access, Iridium satellite voice, and Inmarsat BGAN data terminals. An attempted kiosk-payment federation (PATN, 1998) extended the same architecture to public Internet terminals but failed to reach scale.
Iridium satellite voice was available in Liechtenstein from approximately 2001 (post-bankruptcy relaunch). Thuraya coverage did not extend to Liechtenstein; Inmarsat BGAN data terminals filled the broadband gap from late 2005.
