About the 605 Standard
The 605 connector is the Australian telephone plug standardised by Telecom Australia (now Telstra) in the 1980s. It uses a 4-position plug body with offset pins, physically distinct from RJ-11 — both connectors look similar but are not compatible without an adapter.
Newer Australian and New Zealand installations include RJ-11 outlets alongside or instead of 605; some buildings expose both. For modem or fax connectivity in older buildings, a 605-to-RJ-11 adapter is required. The connector also appears occasionally in Fiji and other South Pacific former-Australian-administered territories.
