Step-Down Voltage Converter (220V to 110V)
For travelers going FROM 220-240V grids TO 110V grids
Overview
A step-down voltage converter is used when traveling FROM a 220-240V country TO a 110-127V country with a single-voltage 110V appliance, or — more commonly — when bringing a 110V appliance into a 220V country temporarily. The classic case is a Brit visiting the US with a 110V curling iron borrowed at home, OR a European visiting Mexico with a 110V-only travel hair dryer.
Most modern electronics (laptop chargers, phone chargers, electric shavers, camera batteries) are dual-voltage rated 100-240V — they need only a plug-shape adapter and NOT a step-down converter. Check the spec plate before buying a converter.
Match the wattage of the converter to the appliance: small electronics (50W), laptops (100W), hair dryers and irons (1000W+). Heavy-duty 1500-2000W step-down converters exist for kitchen appliances; they are bulky and have limited duty cycles.
